Look for nice firm, plump, straight spears, that hold themselves completely erect, and have tight crowns at their tips.
Look for a vibrant color — whether that means green, white, or even purple — with a paler shade toward the base and a duskier appearance at the tips.
Past that, they should should be shiny plump and smooth without any blemishes.
