When it comes to summer squashes, size is a pretty good indicator. For the oblong kind, try to keep them to no more than about a foot in length; for the round sorts, look for no more than maybe 4 ½ inches across.
Past that, look for a nice taut skin (some varieties are smooth and some are rough, so that is definitely not a sign of quality) and a nice firm texture. Avoid any soft spots if you find them.
Look for a nice glossy skin and a consistent color — whether milky yellow, pale green, or anything between — across the squash’s exterior
