When it comes to zucchini, size is a pretty good indicator. For the oblong kind, try to keep them to no more than about a foot in length; for the round sorts, look for no more than maybe 4 ½ inches across.
Past that, look for a nice taut skin — though some are smooth and some are rough and that is definitely not a sign of bad quality — and a nice firm texture. Avoid any soft spots of you find them.
