Lettuce should feel firm and robust, not at all as if its wilting, so avoid any soft or slimy feeling leaves.
If buying by the head, look for a tight, firm head that feels heavy for its size.
The leaves should look vigorous, with a bright green color — unless you're looking for red or purple!
Avoid any leaves that seem to be going yellow or brown.
Lettuce does best in a humid environment, so try simply placing a wet cloth (or paper towel) at the top of the bowl or container.
